Avion Films’ George Morita has been busy of late, picking up one day as director/dop for Quaker out of Harrod and Mirlin and a day for Philips through dmb&b. Morita scored an additional two days as director on an assignment for Raisin Bran through Leo Burnett, with Peter O’Fallan as cinematographer.
At Imported Artists, Charlie Carlson directed four days on Eaton’s fall campaign through Bensimon Byrne. John Stanier handled dop duties and Jon Hopp of Third Floor Editing did the post. Director Richard D’Alessio landed a job for Cantel and Gee Jeffery. Sean Valentini was cinematographer on the one-day shoot and Third Floor’s Richard Unruh handled post. Through MacLaren: Lintas, Zack Snyder directed a day for Coffee Mate. Unruh edited.
Damast Gordon and Associates director/dop Steve Gordon landed four days for Mohawk Oil and Palmer Jarvis, Vancouver. Chameleon Film and Video’s Andy Attalai edited and post effects were done at Spin Productions. Director Glen Schultz hooked up with dop Doug Koch on two days for Ford’s ‘I Love My Escort’ campaign through Young and Rubicam. Flashcut Editing’s Tim Kirkwood handled post on ‘Girder’ and ‘Office’ and Rosnick MacKinnon took care of the music.
Also at dga, Dan Izzard directed and Nicholas Allen-Woolfe shot six days on two spots (each with a 30 and 60 version) for GMC Trucks (see Storyboards, this page). The assignment, out of MacLaren: Lintas, was edited by Norm Odell of Flashcut. The Einstein Bros. did the music.
At The Directors Film Company, director Doug Moshoian picked up a day for two spots for Leon’s, with George Willis handling camera. Smash’s Barry Farrell edited the job from Doner Schur Peppler.
John Lloyd of Dalton Films served as director/dop on a one-day assignment for Sunset Boulevard and Echo Advertising. Randy MacDonald directed a day for Wal-Mart, with Gabor Tarko on camera. The agency was smw. MacDonald and Tarko also teamed up on a day for Tide through Saatchi and Saatchi.
At Circle Productions, Robert Turner directed and Barry Peterson shot two days for Shopper’s Drug Mart through Chiat/Day.
In Vancouver, director Phil Spink of Apple Box Productions worked on a two-day shoot for the British Columbia Automobile Association through bbdo, Vancouver. The two fx-driven spots with animated backgrounds were shot by John Hautman and posted at Northwest Imaging and fx.
In Montreal, La Fabrique d’Images director Jacques Fournier and dop Steve Danyluk shot two French 30s, ‘Calculatrice’ and ‘La lune,’ for Bell’s ongoing Inta-Avantage/Privilege PME campaign out of Cossette Communication-Marketing. Gilles Kasprzak directed two French 30s for Always out of dmb&b, with Danyluk the dop.
Director Karim Waked and dop David Franco got the call on ‘Magic mauve,’ a new Kellogg’s Froot Loops spot featuring a delightful salsa-dancing berryperson, shot for RTA Publicite and creative head Raymonde Lavoie. The latest Mikes offer, ‘La Question,’ out of Prisme Communications, was directed by Marc S. Grenier, with tres busy Danyluk on board as dop.
Also out of La Fabrique, four English/French 30s for the saaq featuring assorted livestock creating major havoc in busy city traffic. The tricky two-day pool was shot in early October by Fournier and dop Danyluk and was out of Groupe Interaction Martin. A Banque Nationale 30-second tv tribute to aging pop group Beau Dommage was directed by Francois Gingras, with dop Bernard Fougeres. The agency is Pierre Audet’s Foug.
There’s more. A three-day Burger King fall campaign featuring spokesman Marc-Andre Coallier, new to the tqs network this fall, was directed by Grenier. Franco was the dop and the agency is Marketel. Buzz handled post duties. AstralTech provided lab services and Supersuite did the film-to-tape transfer.
And last but not least, two eye-catching 30-second Bureau Laitier/Dairy Bureau cheese messages that take a fantasy fable approach with animated bedtime characters. The elaborate spots were directed and lit by Greg Ramsey and are out of agency bcp.
At Cinelande, new commercial action includes spots for GMC Trucks and Cossette, Ultramar’s Christmas promo out of Palm Publicite Marketing, GM Saturn and Cossette, Bell Mobilite and Cossette, and the 1994 Canadian Tire Xmas campaign out of Doner Schur Peppler.
Erik Canuel directed the French/ English gmc Sonoma spot, with Gary Waller the dop and Jacques Pigeon the art director. Francois Girard was the director on the Ultramar promo and Franco was the dop.
Director Charles Biname and dop Guy Dufaux handled duties on the ‘real life’ dealer showroom testimonials for Saturn. And Biname, Dufaux and talented art director Andre Guimond did the job on the Bell Mobilite Liberti spot, which features a forkless piano tuner on call at a lonely monastery.
Canadian Tire’s Christmas campaign features spokesman Michel Forget and the strange little elf Gratteux. Shot in-studio at Cinelande and posted at Hybride Technologies, the three 30s plus donuts were helmed by director Serge Jacques and veteran cinematographer Walter Bal.
Jet Film director Alastair Paton and dop J.P. Trudel shot a French 30 at Cite du Cinema for Trust General and agency Corrida. The message was posted on the Henry at Supersuite. Director Michel David and dop Danyluk orchestrated exploding tv sets and $40,000 in cash mushrooming through the air on a huge one-day shoot for Loto-Quebec’s Celebrations ’95 and Communications bleu blanc rouge. The music was by Sylvain Boudreau.
Animation action from Productions Pascal Blais includes four 15s for Bureau Laitier du Canada and bcp, with a contribution from Dany Bergeron and Big Bang Technologies; a three mini-spot pool for Bell long distance called ‘Golf,’ with Sylvain Chomet directing; a Loto-Quebec 30 for Palm and Figaro Films directed by Pascal Blais and posted at Centre de montage electronique; a signature Cordell Barker commercial called ‘Intermax,’ produced for Bell Canada and Cossette; and a Multi-Marques Gailuron 30 directed by Denis Roy and coproduced by Blais and Big Bang for agency Groupe Everest.
The cameras keep rolling at Figaro Films where new director Martin Ouellette and dop Trudel shot two French 30s for 1/2 Lune cake and Cossette. cme did the post. Director Glynn Bydwell and traveling dop Morita shot a 20-second French/Dutch spot for Quick Restaurants out of bcp and Huret Streliski, bcp’s Paris affiliate. Director Richard Ciupka and dop Harold Trepanier shot three big 30s over three days for gm’s Geo Metro and Cossette. Denis Papillon edited the pool at Montage Metaphore. cme did the transfer.
Still at Figaro, Claude Brie and cinematographer Trudel shot a one-day 30 for Bulldog Grip’s Draft Stop and agency bcdt. Brie and dop Rene Ohashi shot a French 30, ‘Swinging Type,’ for Royal Bank and Canadian Plus Visa out of agency Allard Communication.
And finally, u.k. videoclip ace Andy Morahan directed ‘Pas Rap,’ a French/English 30 for Labatt Bleue Dry and agency PNMD/ Publitel. Daniel Pearl and Danyluk were the cinematographers. The off-line was done at busy edit house Metaphore by Pierre Guerin. Hybride and cme shared post duties.
And for those of you who were wondering, Terry Collier was the dop on the Ford spot mentioned in last issue’s Commercial Directions.
