Members of the Canadian Society of Cinematographers gathered at the King Edward Hotel in Toronto this month to honor their own at the 37th annual CSC Awards.

This year’s winners are:

Best industrial cinematography: Matthew R. Phillips for The Big Shoe, Barrett Randmaa Video Communications.

Best unique cinematography: Maris Jansons, csc, for Kurt Browning: You Must Remember This, Insight Productions/cbc.

Best tv drama cinematography: Alar Kivilo, csc, for Mary Silliman’s War, Citadel/Heritage.

Best dramatic short cinematography: Greg Middleton for Hate Mail, Driftwood Productions.

Best documentary cinematography: Tony Wannamaker for St Bruno – My Eyes as a Stranger, Memory Pictures.

Best commercial cinematography: Barry Gravelle for Bell Canada’s ‘Campagne Attitude,’ Les Film Figaro.

Best tv series cinematography: John Holosko, csc, for Catwalk ‘Resurrection Blues,’ Catrun Productions ii.

Best theatrical feature cinematography: Barry Stone, csc, for Paris France, Lightshow/Alliance.

The Roy Tash Award (for outstanding news cinematography): Gord Ekick for Iowa Floods, Global Television.

The Stan Clinton Award (for best news essay where cinematographic excellence is the prime consideration): Danny Cook for Dis-Scent for CBC Toronto.

Telefilm Canada student cinematography award: First place, David Greene of York University for A Pretty Strong Word; second place, Jeffrey Sibbery of Ryerson Polytechnic University for The Binnacle; third place (tie), Mark Kueper (Virtual Bill) and Jody A. Shapiro (Bed #23), both of York University.

The Bill Hilson Award for outstanding service contributing to the development of the motion picture industry was presented to Bill White, president of William F. White.

The Kodak New Century Award for lifetime achievement in cinematography went to Roger Moride, csc. Born and educated in France, where he earned cinematography degrees from two universities, Moride came to Canada in the early 1950s on a two-year assignment for the National Film Board and has been here since. He has dop credits on more than 10 feature films, 30 documentaries, 12 tv series, and 120 commercials.

Kenneth Post, a csc member for 30 years and a past csc president, received the Fuji Award for extraordinary contribution to the society.

Lifetime memberships were presented to Fritz Spiess, csc, a now-retired commercial cinematographer with over 3,000 commercials to his credit, and Kenneth Gregg, csc, who worked primarily with the cbc.
