MONTREAL — After the Quebec government resulting, protracted turf war turned off many American producers.
‘Bill 32 is really important,’ says Fraiklin. ‘It’s quite major that the issue has been resolved. I think it will have a significant impact on the industry.’
The renewed interest in Montreal is also a direct result of the province’s new tax credit for foreign producers, which allows them to claim 25% of all production-related expenses. In the past, producers could only claim a rebate for labor costs, which typically comprise half of a production budget. As a result, the new rules essentially double the value of the Quebec tax credit
This government aid comes at a time when the film-shoot business is on the decline. There was only $65 million worth of Hollywood production in Quebec last year, down from $265 million the year before, and there hasn’t been a big-budget Hollywood film shoot here in the past two years.
