Whites acquires Parallel Rentals amid industry consolidation

The deal for the Vancouver-based location equipment supply house follows William F. White and SIM Group busily buying up smaller players to provide one-stop shopping for producers.

Consolidation in the Canadian production services supply business continued this week with news William F. White has acquired Vancouver-based location equipment supplier Parallel Rentals.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. But the acquisition agreement will see the rental shop renamed Whites Parallel LES Inc., as it continues to supply location shooting equipment from traffic control, tents and heaters to tables and make-up mirrors.

Andrew McLean and Linda McLean, who founded the company in 1987 and are principals of Parallel Rentals, will continue running the renamed company already located near to Whites Vancouver.

Whites’ deal for Parallel Rentals follows rival The SIM Group acquiring PS Production Services, Toronto post-production house Pixel Underground and Toronto audio post service provider Tattersall Sound and Picture.

For its part, Whites recently acquired Telescopic Camera Cranes Inc., based in Vancouver, and Toronto-based Location Equipment Supply Inc., which was rebranded Whites Location Equipment Supply Inc.

The industry consolidation follows a plunge in the value of the Canadian dollar, which has the film and TV production sector looking ahead to a strong 2015.

The expected uptick in film and TV production, including from Los Angeles producers shooting mostly in Vancouver and Toronto, is being underpinned by domestic film and TV production continuing at a strong pace.
