Sinking Ship Entertainment picked up nine nominations across three kids series for the 43nd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards, with 9 Story Media Group also receiving nods for two of its series.
Odd Squad, which is produced by Sinking Ship Entertainment and the Fred Rogers Company, picked up a total of six nominations, including Outstanding Children’s Series, Outstanding Writing in a Children’s or Pre-School Children’s Series and Outstanding Directing in a Children’s or Preschool Children’s Series. Odd Squad airs on PBS in the U.S. and on TVO in Canada.
Sinking Ship’s Annedroids, which airs on Amazon Instant Video in the U.S. and TVO in Canada, was also nominated for outstanding direction in a kids’ series. Sinking Ship’s Dino Dan: Trek’s Adventures was nominated for outstanding direction in a kids’ series and outstanding kids series. Dino Dan: Trek’s Adventures airs on Nickelodeon in the U.S. and on TVO in Canada.
Sinking Ship’s J.J. Johnson serves as director on Dino Dan, Odd Squad and Annedroids, earning three out of the four nominations in the kids’ series directing category.
Elsewhere, Peg + Cat, which is produced by 9 Story and The Fred Rogers Company for PBS Kids, earned a total of six nominations, including Outstanding Pre-School Children’s Animated Program, Outstanding Writing in a Preschool Animated Program and Outstanding Music Direction and Composition. Daniel Tiger’s Neighbourhood, produced by 9 Story, The Fred Rogers Company and Out of the Blue Enterprises, was nominated for Outstanding Writing in a Preschool Animated Program. Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood airs on PBS and CBC.
On the big showing for Sinking Ship at the Emmys, Johnson said he was both “relieved and thrilled” to get the news Tuesday afternoon, after a long day of waiting – and multiple years of 14-hour days: “It’s been a wonderously hellish two years of producing dangerously,” he says with a laugh.
And although “we do the work because we love the work,” he notes, the recognition the Emmys brings is good for business.
“What’s great for these kinds of awards is that the U.S. and international recognition is so much more prominent on them,” he says. “Already we’re getting inundated by a number of broadcasters in the States reaching out, to both congratulate and [say] ‘we should chat.’ And I love that because I think that’s something the international community does really well. When they see something rising, they gravitate towards it, but they [also] actively reach out.”
Johnson also points out that the nominations across a wide range of craft categories supports the strategy Sinking Ship has pursued in bringing all three nominated shows through production.
“We’ve tried to build our own little studio system with Sinking Ship and so we’ve got these great crews who move through each show and for all of them to get a wink and a nod in different categories speaks to how strong this team has become over the last 10 years.”
The Daytime Emmy awards gala will be broadcast on U.S. net Pop on Sunday, April 26 at 8 p.m. EST.
