Sinking Ship makes Room

TVOntario and other educasters will next month debut The Jungle Room, a new preschooler series from Sinking Ship Productions. The 26 x 11, billed as a reality series, follows a gang of children aged four to six through the titular and ‘relatively adult-free’ day care, where they take part in activities and learn about topics as varied as fire safety and the origin of babies.

Liz Haines, who consulted on the Sinking Ship copro This is Daniel Cook, produces and directs in hand with TVO. Anthony Randall — a sort of host, but more an adult supervisor, according to a spokesperson — will be on air with the kids.

‘This series is a true celebration of a preschooler’s world of first times, big emotions and friendships,’ said Haines in a Tuesday statement. ‘The series connects kids while jump-starting the viewer into all kinds of learning, from how to make a scary spider to erupting your own volcano.’

Haines, a former insider at TVO Kids, also produced the series Off the Hook and Stuff. She later worked on the pre- and after-school programming blocks on CBC. She shares creator and producer credit with Sinking Ship’s J.J. Johnson (This is Daniel Cook, Roll Play).

An 18 x 10 companion series, Gorilla Parenting for the Jungle Room, is also due to air this winter, looking to help parents with questions about parenting. It is in preproduction now, again under Haines and Johnson.

Jungle Room will air at 6:45 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. ET on TVO, and on Access, The Knowledge Network and SCN.
