DVD release a Party for Christal

It left Quebec screens only weeks ago after a four-month, $2-million run, and now the teen comedy A vos marques…Party! has landed on DVD store shelves and rocketed into the sales Top 10, according to Nielsen VideoScan data.

Produced and released by Christal Films, the DVD was launched July 31 and has sold around 35,000 copies, according to company EVP Claude Carpentier. The title garnered the seventh spot in Canadian DVD sales for the week ending Aug. 5.

‘It’s excellent,’ he says. ‘I’m really pleased, especially since it was released only in Quebec.’ Carpentier hopes to ultimately sell 50,000 copies of the disc.

Turning around the home-video release quickly after its theatrical run has allowed Christal to benefit from the ‘vibe around the film,’ says Carpentier. The marketing for A vos marques…Party! has been aimed at the eight- to 25-year-old back-to-school crowd.

‘We wanted it to be in stores in time for fall-shopping season,’ he adds. ‘We hope it’s going to be a subject of discussion at school.’

The high-school romantic comedy, which features Montreal Olympic diver Alexandre Despatie, has been compared to 1980s Hollywood youth classics Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles. Carpentier believes it’s touched a chord with audiences because it has a positive message. ‘It’s a real feel-good movie,’ he says.
