Global Television has announced plans to make a Canadian version of the family game show Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?, and will begin taping five episodes in Toronto in October, following a deal with Mark Burnett Productions.

The net has again tapped John Brunton of Toronto’s Insight Productions as producer, following their collaboration earlier this year on the homegrown edition of the hit NBC gameshow Deal or No Deal.

‘Insight had a great time working with Global on Deal or No Deal Canada…it was a huge ratings success and we’re all excited to take on the new challenge of producing Are You Smarter Than a Canadian 5th Grader?,’ said Brunton in a release.

The series will feature an all-Canadian batch of fifth grade panelists, along with a celebrity host, who has yet to be named. Producers will conduct regional casting calls for kids in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg, Toronto and Halifax.

‘It’s a great chance to test our kids, our contestants, and get families in on the fun as we take Canada back to school,’ said CanWest MediaWorks SVP of programming and production Barbara Williams. The show will air this fall, though no date has been confirmed.
