Cochons faces Mr. Bean

The French comedy Les 3 p’tits cochons is looking to pass the $2-million mark this weekend as it continues its strong run in Quebec, facing new competition from funnyman Rowan Atkinson in Mr. Bean’s Holiday and the Jet Li actioner War.

Cochons, the feature directorial debut of Bon Cop, Bad Cop actor Patrick Huard, will play on slightly fewer than the 100 screens on which it opened in la belle province Aug. 10 via Christal Films. It has made nearly $1.7 million at the box office to date.

Meanwhile, Mr. Bean’s Holiday will play wide through Universal Pictures, while the counter-programmed War, about an FBI agent seeking revenge for his partner’s murder, will open on 190 screens through Maple Pictures.

The Aug. 24 weekend will also see Alliance Atlantis release the romantic comedy The Nanny Diaries, starring Scarlett Johansson, on 196 screens. Alliance sister Odeon Films will open the Calgary-shot boxing drama Resurrecting the Champ, starring Samuel L. Jackson and Josh Hartnett, on 25 screens in markets including Toronto, Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary.

Warner Independent Pictures is cautiously releasing the environmentally themed documentary The 11th Hour, cowritten and produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. Launching in Toronto, it will expand to cities including Vancouver, Montreal, Calgary and Winnipeg next weekend.

Coming up Aug. 31, the homegrown comedy Greg & Gentillon, from writer/director Matthiew Klinck, will have its theatrical debut in English Canada in Toronto and Vancouver, after having played in Quebec in April. Meanwhile, Seville Pictures will open the French import Lady Chatterley in Quebec and Toronto.
