Quebec films have again taken command of the homegrown box office as the comedy Les 3 p’tits cochons and the drama Contre toute espérance claimed the number one and two spots for the week ending Aug. 23.
Cochons, about the infidelities of three brothers, added another $500,000 over the weekend for a total box office of $2.5 million after opening on 100 screens Aug. 10 through Christal Films. The film, which marks the directorial debut of Quebec thesp Patrick Huard, ranked seventh overall among Canadian and foreign releases for the week.
Though it played on only 12 screens, the Seville Pictures drama Contre toute espérance, from Montreal director Bernard Émond, landed in the number two spot with $96,495 after one week in theaters on only 12 screens. The film stars Guylaine Tremblay (La vie après l’amour) as a woman trying to survive after losing her job and her home. Contre toute is the second in a trilogy of films about the virtues of faith, hope and charity and follows 2005’s La neuvaine. Émond is currently working on a script for the final installment, Les fins dernières.
A spokesperson for Seville tells Playback Daily the company is keeping up the marketing campaign, though the film will not expand its screen count.
Rounding out the top five for the week were Alliance Atlantis Vivafilm’s Ma tante Aline with a total box-office take of $900,000 after five weeks, the large-format doc Dinosaures 3D: Les géants de la Patagonie with $472,314 after 10 weeks, and, the lone English title, Away from Her, with $1.4 million after 16.
