Denis Villeneuve is to direct the Blade Runner sequel, with Harrison Ford reprising his role of Rick Deckard and Thunderbird Films executive producing the Alcon Entertainment film.

The movie will shoot in summer 2016.

Villeneuve most recently helmed Sicario, which stars Emily Blunt, Josh Brolin and Benicio Del Toro, and before that directed the Hugh Jackman-thriller Prisoners for Warner Bros. and Incendies in Quebec.

Hampton Fancher, who co-wrote the original Blade Runner pic, and Michael Green wrote the original screenplay for the sequel based on an idea by Fancher and Ridley Scott.

The story takes place several decades after the conclusion of the 1982 original.
