You can’t be in two places at once, much less in three or four, no matter how good the movies in those theaters might be. Which is why every edition of the Toronto International Film Festival forces us all to make some hard choices. See the new Greenaway picture? Or wait for the theatrical release and go to Midnight Madness instead? And so we ask:
What do you want to see at TIFF?
Across the Universe. In the first half of the trailer I was like, ‘This is so typical and silly.’ Then it goes nuts and I was thinking, ‘This is going to be the greatest movie of all time.’
Richie Mehta, writer/director, Amal
Jeremy Podeswa’s Fugitive Pieces… It’s such a subtle, provocative work that requires such care in adaptation. I’m looking forward to seeing how he met the challenge.
Carl Bessai, director, Normal
Into the Wild, Sean Penn’s movie. I think Penn is an amazing director. I really liked The Pledge and this new movie seems to be another dark story for him. He chooses some pretty dark stuff and he manages to get it made.
Nathan Tichenor, managing director, Crescent Entertainment
I’m really looking forward to Battle in Seattle. I’m eager to see how they captured that story. The movie dramatizes the WTO riot from a few years back. I think it was a real watershed moment in grassroots activism and I want to see if the story works as a film.
James Motluk, director, Whose University Is It?
I’m really looking forward to Emotional Arithmetic and Fugitive Pieces. Emotional Arithmetic has a really great cast and I’m quite fond of the book.
Liz Jarvis, producer, The Stone Angel
I hear Just Buried is really great and the director is really handsome.
Chaz Thorne, writer/director, Just Buried
