Slings, ReGenesis lead Gemini noms

The Movie Network and Movie Central series Slings & Arrows and ReGenesis lead with 14 and 12 nominations, respectively, while there is no sign of CBC’s Little Mosque on the Prairie among best comedy nominees going into the 22nd annual Gemini Awards.

The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television on Aug. 28 revealed the noms for its 91 program, craft and performance categories, putting ReGenesis and the defunct Slings up for best dramatic series alongside CTV’s Whistler, and CBC’s Intelligence – which has 11 nods overall – and its cancelled medical drama Jozi-H.

ReGenesis star Peter Outerbridge is up against Paul Gross and the late William Hutt from Slings for best actor in a dramatic series, while Wendy Crewson and Sarah Polley are nom’d for supporting roles in ReGenesis and Slings, respectively.

The first smash season of Mosque received only two nominations: direction for Michael Kennedy and writing for Alan Rae, both for the episode ‘The Convert.’ CTV’s Corner Gas, meanwhile, grabbed three writing nominations for Brent Butt, Mark Farrell and Paul Mather (who has since jumped ships to Mosque), in addition to nods for best comedy, ensemble performance and direction.

Gas will be up against The Comedy Network’s Odd Job Jack, Showcase’s Rent-A-Goalie, and CBC’s Royal Canadian Air Farce and This Hour Has 22 Minutes.

‘From year to year, the issue of what gets nominated is always a source of debate and interest…that’s a good thing,’ says new Academy head Sara Morton.

The CBC mini Dragon Boys weighs in with nine nominations, including best dramatic miniseries, followed by seven nods each for the CTV MOW Doomstown and its comedy Robson Arms.

On the nonfiction side, CBC stalwart the fifth estate has 11 nods, including best news information series. CBC News: The National grabbed eight nominations, though host Peter Mansbridge was snubbed in the best news anchor category, which is comprised of Gord Martineau for CityNews at Six, reigning champ Kevin Newman for Global National, and Ian Hanomansing for CBC News: Canada Now.

For the second year, CTV News is absent from news categories over concerns about the Gemini voting process. Morton says the Academy would like to have CTV News participate again and is in talks with the broadcaster.

‘CTV is an active participant in other categories this year and they’re also strong supporters of the Academy corporately,’ she adds.

The Gemini Awards’ main gala, which was held in Vancouver last year, moves to Regina on Oct. 28 and returns to CBC for live broadcast after two years on Global, which will still be on board with a red-carpet pre-show on ET Canada. Galas for news, sports and documentary; lifestyle, children’s and youth; and drama, comedy and variety shows take place Oct. 15, 16 and 17 in Toronto.
