CMF invests $8.1M across 31 digital media projects

The Canada Media Fund has invested $8.1 million across 31 digital media productions to support development and marketing as part of its experimental stream funding program.

Twenty-three Canadian companies received funding to develop their digital media projects, for a total investment of $6.2 million. The selected projects included three applications, one eBook, seven interactive platforms, 11 games and one social media platform.

Four projects were awarded $400,000 from the fund, the most any one project received in the development stream. The four projects included the Snowflake System game software from Smokebomb Entertainment, the Superhuman game from Minority Media, virtual reality historical vignettes from SimWave Consulting and the Necropolis. La ville des fantômes game from a numbered, Quebec-based company. A full list of recipients can be found here.

Eight other digital media projects also received funding to support marketing and promotion initiatives, for a total of $1.8 million. The selected projects included three games, three interactive platforms, one social media applications and one software application. Two of the projects are from Ontario, two are from British Columbia and two are from Quebec.

The projects that received the most funding in this stream included the Plateforme RealMotion application from a numbered Quebec-based company ($371,926) and the sports app Shnarped from B.C.-based Interactive Athletes ($360,000). Fifteen of the companies that received funding are based in Quebec, three hail from Ontario, two are based in British Columbia. One company from each Alberta, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador also received funding.
