House eclipses busy week on CTV

Dr. Gregory House was a thorn in the competition’s side last week, when season four of the Global medical drama premiered with a series high 3.3 million viewers (2+), making it the most-watched show of the fall season so far and casting a tall, lanky shadow over a week busy with premieres on CTV.

House placed well ahead of returning CTV series including Grey’s Anatomy with 2.5 million, CSI with 2.4 million, CSI: NY with 2.3 million, and CSI: Miami with 2.2 million viewers. South of the border, House played to a relatively softer 18.3 million on Fox, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Among new shows, the Grey’s spinoff Private Practice was the strongest, reaching 1.6 million on Wednesday at 9 p.m., followed by Global’s new family drama Cane, starring Jimmy Smits, which drew a respectable 1.2 million to its Tuesday 10 p.m. timeslot. Ratings beyond Thursday were not available at press time, though CTV premiered the vampire story Moonlight on Friday and Dirty Sexy Money on Sunday.

Out west, Practice lost to E!’s new Bionic Woman, which nabbed 41,000 more viewers in the 18-49 demographic in the Vancouver market, where it is filmed, hitting 128,000. In Toronto, Practice won by just 3,000 viewers in the same demo, reaching 226,000.

Also making its debut last week was CTV’s dark comedy Big Shots, about four CEOs, which drew a decent 1.1 million viewers in its Thursday 10 p.m. timeslot, opposite Global’s Shark with 780,000 viewers.

Global’s new time-traveling drama Journeyman and its crime yarn Life failed to make a splash up against perennial favorites CSI: Miami and CSI: NY. Journeyman premiered to 811,000 viewers on Monday at 10 p.m., Life reached 713,000 on Wednesday in the same timeslot.

Among returning shows, Heroes grabbed 1.6 million viewers on Monday at 9 p.m., up slightly from last season’s 1.2 million average, but lost to the season five premiere of CTV’s Dancing with the Stars, which aired to 1.9 million.
