Unions honor Lepage

Renowned theater artist and filmmaker Robert Lepage was honored for his contribution to Canadian and world culture by three of Quebec’s largest actors’ unions Sunday night.

The director of Le Confessionnal and Le Polygraphe was honored at an international conference of actors’ unions in Quebec City by three of Canada’s largest unions — the Union des Artistes, Canadian Actors’ Equity and ACTRA.

‘We chose to give Monsieur Lepage a special honor from all the film, stage, television and new media performers of Canada in recognition of his unique, bold and already huge body of work,’ ACTRA National President Richard Hardacre tells Playback Daily.

‘Our three unions are strong advocates for artists and for cultural diversity. Robert Lepage is a shining example of why we support artists — his work is anchored in a local context and yet, he is known internationally, bringing a local cultural reference to a worldwide audience,’ said UDA president Raymond Legault in a statement.

In 1997 Lepage became founding artistic director of La Caserne Dalhousie (Center of Creation), a multidisciplinary production center in Quebec City, where his company Ex Machina is based. Lepage was presented with a bronze sculpture created by renowned Québécois artist René Derouin.
