MONTREAL — With what it says is the only Dolby Fax system in town, Montreal’s Audio Postproduction SPR has welcomed big-name American actors such as Angelina Jolie, Sharon Stone, Charlize Theron and John Malkovich through its doors.

Malkovich recently dropped by while in Montreal shooting the Canada/France coproduction Afterwards; he had to do some dialogue work on The Great Buck Howard (Playtone).

‘We get lots of stars coming in to redo lines,’ says SPR president Normand Rodrigue. ‘It saves the client money because they don’t have to fly the performers back to L.A.’

Behind the glamorous and prosperous facade is the company’s French bread and butter. The bulk of SPR’s work is simultaneous dubbing into French – including features such as Blades of Glory and Last Kiss – which are sold to France, as well as TV shows and films for local and international markets.

‘We have 17 TV series and three feature films we are working on right now,’ Rodrigue elaborates. ‘We are popular because our French is international. Our clients can kill two birds with one stone. Our dubs work in Quebec and in Europe.’

Since its start in 1979, the company has grown to 20 full-time staffers and a roster of freelancers for its dubbing department.

SPR’s clients include Disney, Warner Bros., Lucasfilm, Paramount and 20th Century Fox. The company also does original sound work, for projects including Galafilm’s Big Sugar and The Great War, as well as Flow for Cirque du Soleil.
