Geminis add digital categories

The Gemini Awards will have five new categories for this year’s 25th edition as the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television announced Monday that it’s now accepting entries for digital media prizes.

The new awards will recognize cross-platform projects, which are created to enhance enjoyment of a TV show, and original productions of which the first broadcast is intended for a medium other than TV.

The Academy has also added a digital media membership branch to its television division, members of which will vote for related categories in the Geminis and Prix Gémeaux.

‘The addition of the digital media awards, as well as the introduction of the digital media membership branch, illustrate our ongoing commitment to representing and recognizing the work of our colleagues across the country,’ commented Academy CEO Sara Morton in a release.

The five new categories are: best cross-platform project for fiction, non-fiction and children’s and youth, and best original program produced for digital media, fiction and non-fiction. The Academy also added a special award for outstanding technical achievement in digital media.

The deadline for submissions is Tuesday, May 18. Applicants for the special award will have until July 15.

The Academy earlier this year also added two new awards for research.
