Owl copro lands at Sienna

Another adaptation of a Patricia Highsmith novel is in the works, this time under Sienna Films, which is shooting the psychological thriller Cry of the Owl on location in and around Toronto.

Directed by Brit Jamie Thraves (The Low Down), it stars Paddy Considine (Hot Fuzz) as a troubled man trying to escape a tumultuous marriage when he becomes infatuated with a girl, played by Julia Stiles (The Bourne Ultimatum). Their meeting leads to a relationship with dire consequences. Owl also features Canuck thesp Caroline Dhavernas (Surviving My Mother).

Producers on the Canada/Germany copro include Sienna’s Julia Sereny and Jennifer Kawaja, along with Malte Grunert of German prodco Studio Hamburg, Antoine de Clermont-Tonnere of France’s MACT Productions, and Jamie Laurenson, Michael Wood and David Thompson of BBC Film.

Production is set to wrap on Dec. 11, with post to be completed in Germany. Owl will open in Canuck theaters early next summer through Christal Films, while Myriad Pictures is attached as international sales agent.

Highsmith, who died in 1995, is best known for Strangers on a Train, turned into a feature by Alfred Hitchcock in 1950, and The Talented Mr. Ripley, which director Anthony Minghella adapted for the screen in 1999.
