Lionsgate’s diversified growth strategy creating content for expanding broadcast and SVOD platforms helped save its second quarter results unveiled on Thursday.
The Vancouver-based mini-studio beat Wall Street expectations as it posted net income of $20.5 million for the three months to Sept. 30, compared to $505,000 in the same period of last year.
The second quarter fiscal 2014 earnings last year included a $36.2 million debt payment.
Overall revenue was up 11% to $552.9 million.
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer on Friday told analysts during a morning call that the latest financial results had contributions from “our entire portfolio of businesses.”
That was welcomed as the motion picture segment revenue during the latest quarter slid to $398 million, compared to a year-earlier $434.4 million, as lower theatrical and home entertainment revenue was offset by surging TV revenue and higher motion picture revenue from pay and free TV windows.
On the theatrical side, two wide releases, Expendables 3 and Step Up All In did not compare with box office to year-earlier performers Now You See Me and Not Included.
That contrasts with TV production revenue rising 140% to $154.9 million, as Lionsgate delivered 55 episodes of TV shows like Anger Management, Orange is the New Black and Nashville, compared to 20 episodes delivered in the year-earlier period.
Lionsgate is targeting not just broadcast, but digital platforms as well.
The mini-studio last week received a straight-to-series 10-episode order from Hulu for Jason Reitman’s Casual comedy, and Orange is the New Black is the top-performing TV show on Netflix worldwide, Feltheimer told analysts.
And the Keanu Reeves-starrer John Wick recently turned into a surprise box office hit for Lionsgate.
“I actually think that our competitive advantage in all of our businesses is we have the scale and capital to do pretty much anything we want, but the flexibility to move quickly and take advantage of things like John Wick, which came to us 11 weeks ago and turned into a hit,” he said.
