Guelph’s Possibility Films and Hamilton-based Crafthaus Ltd. have partnered to produce the sci-fi film Defective, with the stated goal of bolstering the film production industries in their respective communities.
With an initial round of financing already closed and a crowfunding campaign on the horizon, the film will be directed by 2013 Canadian Film Festival Super Channel Screenplay Accelerator Award winner Reese Eveneshen and is slated for principal photography in 2015.
Peter Szabo, founder/producer of Possibility Films, was originally the sole producer on the project and met Jeff Boulton of Crafthaus while seeking out additional investors to support Defective.
Boulton was looking for a project to back, Szabo said, and both producers wanted to work on a film that would be shot in their communities rather than moving production to a larger centre like Toronto.
By partnering with Boulton, Defective can now take advantage of the services, talent and – most importantly, financial incentives – available in both Hamilton and Guelph while supporting the local production industries in those cities.
“We both created a good network of supporting businesses, and businesses that could support us,” Szabo told Playback Daily.
In addition to the lower cost of permits and feeding and housing cast and crew, shooting outside the GTA also carries the lucrative benefit of the 10% bonus regional tax credit, Szabo noted. The prodcos are aiming to raise an additional $125,000 in financing for the film.
Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the total budget for Defective was $125,000. The producers have clarified that the they wish to raise a further $125,000 through crowdfunding and other initiatives.
