Lionsgate, Tribeca partner on new SVOD service

The global streaming space is getting more crowded by the day, as Lionsgate and Tribeca Enterprises, which runs the Tribeca Film Festival, have announced a partnership to launch a new SVOD film service in 2015.

The service, to be called Tribeca Short List, will offer library content from both companies, updated weekly, as well as selected outside content, according to an announcement. As of press time, details on the service’s price and geographical availability were not available.

Tribeca Short List will be based in New York and led by a general manager and a board of directors made up of Tribeca and Lionsgate executives, as well as an advisory board.

The announcement continues a long run of digitally focused moves for Vancouver- and Santa Barbara-based Lionsgate. In recent months, the company closed a deal with mobile commerce company Alibaba Group to launch Lionsgate Entertainment World (LGEW), a subscription streaming service for mainland China that will be available exclusively through Alibaba’s latest generation of set-top box.

Other deals Lionsgate has recently closed in the digital space include a multi-year partnership with RocketJump Studios for the creation of film, television and digital content. Lionsgate also recently took a stake in Defy Media and the YouTube branded fitness channel BeFit.

Last week, HBO announced it was jumping into the streaming game and will launch a stand-alone, over-the-top streaming service in the U.S. next year.
