Kino hitches with Winnebago doc

KinoSmith is taking a ride with Winnebago Man, picking up all Canadian rights for the award-winning doc about the YouTube sensation.

Winnebago Man

The doc tells the story of RV salesman Jack Rebney, who gained notoriety after profane outtakes of a sales video he made in the late ’80s eventually made their way online, racking up more than 20,000 million viewers across the web. The clips have also been used in film festivals, TV shows and video games.

KinoSmith will release the doc this fall. KinoSmith’s Robin Smith and Josh Braun of Submarine Entertainment brokered the deal on behalf of the filmmakers.

Winnebago Man picked up prizes at Hot Docs 2009, CineVegas, the Edmonton International Film Festival and IDFA Amsterdam, to name a few.

‘I became fascinated by the idea that so many people were watching Jack Rebney’s private moments of frustration, yet no one knew anything about him as a person. And I was curious to find what happens to people who are exposed on the Internet to unwanted notoriety of this magnitude,’ said director Ben Steinbauer (The Next Tim Day, Summercamp!) in a release.

The doc is billed as the first film about a YouTube celebrity to hit the big screen. This year also happens to mark the 100th anniversary of the RV.

Steinbauer, who hails from Austin-based prodco The Bear Media, produced Winnebago Man with Joel Heller and Malcolm Pullinger, and the film will get a U.S. theatrical release by Kino International, distribution arm of Kino Lorber.
