Bell Lightbox has confirmed that it will open its doors to the public on Sept. 12, two days after TIFF kicks off.
Organizers said Friday that the festival’s new headquarters will be open to screen some TIFF films, but would not say how many of the five cinemas would be ready.
‘We have spent a decade working on this project and its opening marks a new step in the evolution of TIFF,’ said festival director and CEO Piers Handling in Cannes. ‘Audiences visiting our new home and experiencing our wide range of programming will see that we are so much more than a 10-day event in September.’
The cinema and condo complex was originally to open in 2009. Construction continues on its upper tower of condominiums, while the lower portion, the future home of the festival, appears nearly complete.
Two other programs are also set for this fall. The TIFF-curated Essential Cinema, which will include screenings of 100 landmark films such as Citizen Kane, Joan of Arc and L’Avventura and an exhibition of ‘iconic objects and images from the history of cinema.’ An exhibition of Tim Burton films and other items, previously seen at New York’s Museum of Modern Art, will also be shown.
