The third quarter took its toll on DHX Media, as it experienced declines across the board, according to recent results released by the Halifax-based company.
Revenues for the three months ended March 31, 2010 took a 25% dip from $12 million to $9 million, a reduction mainly caused by a lower per half-hour licence fee revenue, as the recession continues to cause a credit crunch for some broadcasters.
‘DHX continued to feel the effects of last year’s difficult advertising market as experienced by our broadcast customers,’ confirmed CEO Michael Donovan in a statement, though he also noted that ‘commissions for new and current series continue to pick up significantly and we look forward to better results in fiscal 2011.’
The lower per half-hour licence fee revenue also contributed to a decline on the proprietary production revenues side, which was down 20% to $5.4 million (versus $6.7 million last year). However, with that amount, DHX created 62 half-hours, a 51% increase compared to the 41 half-hours in the same period last year.
As expected, distribution revenues took a 58% hit, dropping to $1.6 million — a change attributed to the licence period timing for existing contracts.
Still, DHX this quarter saw revenue on a number of contracts in its existing library, and also delivered episodes of newer titles. Significant sales were for programs including The Latest Buzz, The Guard, Franny’s Feet, Kid vs. Kat and Martha Speaks.
Its distribution subsidiary Decode Enterprises also recently inked a deal for preschool series Animal Mechanicals with Hasbro/Discovery JV network The Hub.
