SAG honors Christie

Julie Christie is one step closer to winning an Academy Award after the 66-year-old British thesp secured the best actress prize at the Screen Actors Guild awards on Sunday for her role as Fiona in Sarah Polley’s Away from Her at the Screen Actors Guild awards on Sunday.

Christie beat out Canuck thesp Ellen Page (Juno), Cate Blanchett (Elizabeth: The Golden Age), Marion Cotillard (La vie en rose) and Angelina Jolie (A Mighty Heart) for top female acting honors at the presentation in Los Angeles.

In her acceptance speech, Christie paid tribute to Polley, whom she referred to as the ‘divine Sarah.’

‘Without your tenacious direction, and the beautiful words you put into my mouth in the dialogue, I wouldn’t be holding this. This really belongs to you,’ she said.

Christie also thanked the film’s producers Danny Iron, Jennifer Weiss and Simone Urdl, and fellow actor Gordon Pinsent, who plays her husband Grant in the drama. Away from Her is distributed in Canada by Mongrel Media and by Lionsgate in the U.S.

The SAG award is the latest in a batch of prizes for Christie, who also nabbed a Golden Globe earlier this month. She last won an Oscar in 1966 for her role as the vivacious model Diana Scott in the drama Darling.

Meanwhile, Daniel Day-Lewis was named best actor for his role as a greedy oil prospector in There Will Be Blood.
