Montreal-focused filmmaker residency launched

The Conseil des arts de Montreal, the Societe de developpement des entreprises culturelles and the National Film Board have launched a residency program in Montreal for emerging filmmakers from culturally diverse communities.

In order to qualify for the $75,000, 11-month residency program, applicants must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident who is a visible minority, a recent immigrant who has residency or citizenship in Canada, or a child of an immigrant. The funding through the residency, titled Regard sur Montréal, will support a short documentary project from the selected resident, including training, script writing, production, post-production, promotion and distribution. The NFB is supporting the residency through its Aide au cinéma indépendant – Canada program. The finished documentary must focus on the city of Montreal.

“Since 2006, the Conseil des arts de Montréal has been striving to ensure that the professional arts world mirrors the city’s social fabric, which is very multicultural,” the chair of the Conseil, Jan-Fryderyk Pleszczynski, said in a statement. “By joining forces with SODEC and the NFB (ACIC), we’re expanding our efforts to support emerging talent and integrate culturally diverse artists into the film industry, a goal that fits perfectly with our priorities.”

The application deadline for the residency is Oct. 14.
