The National Film Board has added a new producer to its ranks — one who may be familiar to Canadian film buffs.
The board on Wednesday announced that Yves Ma has joined its Pacific and Yukon Centre. Ma was one of the producers of Julia Kwan’s Eve & the Fire Horse, the first Canadian film to be in official competition at Sundance. The film about the mystic visions and inter-religious wonderings of a young Chinese-Canadian girl received the festival’s special jury prize in 2006 and a hatful of 2007 Genie nominations.
Ma, founder of Vancouver-based production house Firelight CineMa, has also produced Symphony of Silence for the CBC and the short Smile, which played at the 2007 Toronto International Film Festival and at this year’s Sundance.
‘Yves brings a unique and complementary skill set to our team,’ said the center’s exec producer Tracey Friesen in a statement. ‘His passion for storytelling will greatly support the NFB in our commitment to promoting artistic innovation and social relevance across all genres and platforms.’
Ma and the NFB have a history together. He previously received a producer fellowship from the board, as well as similar fellowships and internships from CTV and British Columbia Film.
