There’s nothing fragmented about the attention Bruce Macdonald’s The Tracey Fragments is getting these days.
Its star Ellen Page is nominated for the best actress Genie, and she is also up for an Oscar for the U.S. indie smash hit Juno, which has changed everything. At press time, Tracey’s makers were mum on a U.S. distribution deal rumored to be in the works for a post-Oscars release.
Yet whether the deal is inked or not, Page’s Oscar nod has catapulted her into the global media spotlight and re-ignited interest in McDonald’s split-screen avant-garde feature, which garnered some raves at the Toronto International Film Festival last year.
The edgy coming-of-age tragicomedy racked up six Genie nominations, which has producer Sarah Timmins of Corvid Pictures over the moon.
‘We’re totally thrilled with the Genie nominations, since we’re a relatively small film, and we’re a low-budget [$1 million] kind of scrappy film compared to the films we’re up against, like Eastern Promises and Away from Her,’ she says.
Timmins says Page’s Oscar nomination has put a spotlight on Fragments, as audiences seek out work by Canada’s ‘newest’ star.
‘It’s definitely helped raise the profile of the film, especially from younger audiences,’ Timmins explains. ‘We just had a screening in Toronto and it was very exciting to see the large number of younger people in the audience. That’s new, and it’s because of Ellen.’
The story is about a traumatized teen girl (Page) who spends most of the story riding on the back of a city bus, naked except for a torn shower curtain, looking for her missing brother, who thinks he is a dog. The quirky film is striking a chord with younger audiences.
Timmins adds that there is no doubt that the film’s distributors (Alliance Films in Canada) are going to leverage Page’s 15 minutes of fame.
‘Obviously we’re going to try and take advantage of the focus on Ellen,’ she concedes. The pic is still bowing in a few theaters across Canada, but Timmins says Alliance may revisit the Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto markets to take advantage of all the free publicity.
Genie nominations for Fragments include: McDonald (director); Page; Maureen Medved (adapted screenplay, from her own novel); Jeremiah Munce and Gareth C. Scales (editing); Steven Munro, John Sievert and David Drainie (sound editing); and John Hazen, Matt Chan and Brad Dawe (overall sound).
Fragments is a produced by McDonald’s Shadow Shows in association with Corvid and Alcina Pictures. Timmins produces under executive producers Paul Barkin and Phyllis Laing.
