CBC News has been divided into two camps, with radio exec Jennifer McGuire in charge of programming and Todd Spencer atop its newsgathering efforts, following an all-platforms shuffle of executives revealed Wednesday by Richard Stursberg.
The changes — part of a broader and ongoing rethink of the network’s English side — have also seen the production efforts for both radio and TV merged, under the bailiwick of Fred Mattocks.
Stursberg explained the changes to staff at a presentation in Toronto, talking up the need for CBC to bring its radio, TV and online efforts in line with each other, while stressing that ‘their respective strategies remain the same.’
‘The structure itself — and the teams which will bring it to life — recognize the unique characteristics and demands of each platform while bringing an improved focus to how each is supported in meeting audience programming requirements,’ he said in a statement. ‘This is not about a change in vision or direction.’
There is, however, a greater emphasis on breaking news, added John Cruickshank, newly minted publisher of CBC news, hence the division of duties between McGuire and Spencer. In her new role as executive director of news programming and deputy head of news, she will set the ‘mandate, voice and tone’ for all news shows on radio, TV and online. This follows a promotion just three months ago that saw McGuire step in as head of CBC Radio, taking over for the retired Jane Chalmers.
Spencer, previously with CNN’s Asia bureau, is now executive director of news content.
Mattocks, previously head of regional programming for the TV side, now heads a merged ‘production and resources’ division for radio and television — a natural outcome, said Stursberg, of last fall’s big step towards cross-platform integration. CBC’s French sister, Radio-Canada, is likewise integrated.
‘The media landscape and how people use media is changing dramatically,’ said Mattocks. ‘We need an infrastructure that will help programmers act quickly to meet audiences where they choose to be.’
An executive director — currently Jill Troyer, as an interim — will be tasked with beefing up the CBC’s regional programming.
