Tales From The Organ Trade up for Emmys

Ric Esther Bienstock’s Tales From The Organ Trade will vie for two Emmys at the at the 35th Annual News & Documentary Emmy Awards.

The documentary, which aired on History in Canada and HBO in the U.S. and profiles the underground world of black market organ trafficking, is up for an Emmy in two categories, Outstanding Investigative Journalism and Outstanding Writing. Named in the Emmy nods are Bienstock, Simcha Jacobovici, Felix Golubev and HBO’s Sheila Nevins and Nancy Abraham.

The Emmy recognition comes on the heels of the film’s prestigious Edward R. Murrow award earlier this year.

Also nominated for News and Doc Emmys are two docs from Toronto-based Storyline Entertainment: Herman’s House and The World Before Her.

Angad Singh Bhalla’s Herman’s House was nominated in the Outstanding Arts and Culture Programming category, while Nisha Pahuja’s  The World Before Her was nominated Outstanding Coverage a Current News Story—Long Form.

Tales From the Organ Trade was produced in association with HBO documentary Films, Shaw Media and Canal D, with the participation of the Canadian Media Fund and Rogers Documentary Fund and Rogers Cable Network Fund. Herman’s House received financial support from the Ford Foundation, Ontario Arts Council, Sundance Institute, SVT, and the Jerome Foundation. The World Before Her was pre-sold to TVO and Knowledge and received financial support from Telefilm Canada’s Theatrical Documentary Fund, OMDC’s Film Fund and Rogers Documentary Fund and other international funders.

Also nominated for an Emmy is the NFB and New York Times’ A Short History of the Highrise interactive project, in the New Approaches: Arts, Lifestyle and Culture cateogry.
