CBC and Robert Redford’s Sundance Channel have reached an agreement that will see programming from the U.S. cabler air in a branded block on its newly launched Documentary. The digichannel will offer feature films and doc series produced by Sundance, as well as titles from other sources that ‘share the channel’s spirit and vision,’ according to a Friday press release.
The Ceeb on Thursday unveiled the rebranded channel, formerly The Documentary Channel, and the digital Bold.
Programming boss Kirstine Layfield notes that the channel has always had Sundance programming, but ‘we’ve never branded it as such.’ Among the titles airing under the Sundance banner are one-offs Small Town Gay Bar and Darwin’s Nightmare.
‘It’s an opportunity to reach out to the public and say ‘here’s a name you know,” Layfield told Playback Daily after the presentation.
‘We are very pleased to contribute strong independent documentary programming to this exciting audience, and to be a part of the Canadian television landscape,’ commented Redford in a release.
Sundance programming will air 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Documentary is available to digital cable subscribers for a free preview from March 29 to April 29.
