Megaspeed chasing international audiences

If there’s one thing for certain about motorsports: there are few places in the world it isn’t popular in some form or another.

As such, Discovery Canada knew it was a topic ripe for international distribution, and set out to build Megaspeed, a new six-part original series.

Produced by Discovery’s in-house production arm, Exploration Production Inc., the series offers viewers a behind-the-scenes look at high-profile racing events from around the world, such as the Baja 1000, the European Rally Championship and the Bonneville Salt Flats.

The global focus of the show was part of a strategy to make the series appeal to the number of international clients EPI’s distribution arm currently has on its roster, said executive producer Karen McCairley.

“The whole plan is that it wouldn’t be a U.S.-centric show, because we have lots of international clients. Among those international clients, the vast majority of them do have strands for this type of programming,” McCairley told Playback Daily.

For example, the show will be featured on Australian broadcaster’s Channel 7’s digital channel 7mate, which focuses on sports, comedy and film programming for men. The show has also been sold into territories in the U.K. and Europe, with negotiations currently underway with U.S. broadcasters who may be interested in picking up the series. The first season of the show will feature six one-hour episodes.

In Canada, Megaspeed is set to premiere on Discovery Canada on June 19 at 7 p.m. as part of the channel’s Car Night programming, which also features shows like Fast N’ Loud and Vegas Rat Rods. The popularity of the Car Night programming on Discovery, combined with the international appetite for similar shows, influenced EPI’s decision to make a series focused on high-profile racing events.

“It was a natural fit. They’ve always done well on our channels, and there’s a real demand for that in the marketplace,” McCairley said.

A second series of Megaspeed is already in production, with a premiere date tentatively set for spring 2015.
