As Cannes handed out competition prizes on the weekend, Xavier Dolan grabbed the Jury Prize for Mommy, and David Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars drew Oscar buzz as lead Julianne Moore won for best actress.

Dolan’s provocative family drama, a favourite with critics in Cannes, shared the third-place Jury Prize with French director Jean-Luc Godard’s Goodbye to Language.

Mommy, which stars Antoine-Olivier Pilon, Anne Dorval and Suzanne Clément, is Dolan’s fifth film and his first in Cannes’ official competition.

Julianne Moore, who plays a Hollywood film star from hell desperate to hang on to her career in Cronenberg’s Maps to the Stars, got an Oscar awards season boost with her best actress prize.

The film’s screenwriter, Bruce Wagner, picked up the award for Moore in her absence.

The Cannes jury was led this year by New Zealand filmmaker Jane Campion.

They gave the top prize Palme d’Or to Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Winter Sleep, and the second-place Grand Prix to The Wonders, from Italian director Alice Rohrwacher.
