Blue Ice Group and Toronto-based distributor KinoSmith Inc. are teaming up to form distributor Blue Ice Docs, which will fund and acquire non-fiction work in Canada and beyond.

The company is a joint venture between Blue Ice Group – which oversees Blue Ice Pictures, Blue Ice Productions and owns Toronto’s Bloor Hot Docs Cinema – and boutique distributor KinoSmith, with both groups pooling resources to form Blue Ice Docs.

KinoSmith president Robin Smith will head the new company, in addition to his duties for KinoSmith.

“Both Steven [Silver, Blue Ice Group CEO] and I have a particular passion for documentaries, and a desire to share this passion with others,” said Neil Tabatznik, chairman of Blue Ice Group, in a statement. “Robin’s standing in international documentary circles makes him the ideal partner, and we welcome the opportunity to work with him.”
