Canuck thesp Kim Cattrall will be honored at next month’s Banff World Television Festival with the fest’s award of distinction, and will sit down for an onstage interview with the New York Times’ Bill Carter to discuss her life and career.
The prize, sponsored by NBC Universal Canada, recognizes an individual’s outstanding career in the broadcast industry. Cattrall, who grew up just outside Vancouver, is best known for her role as the sassy Samantha Jones on HBO’s Sex and the City, a role that has garnered her a Golden Globe and two Screen Actors Guild awards, along with various other nominations.
She reprises that role in Sex and the City: The Movie – a big-screen version of the popular series set to hit Canadian theaters on May 30 through Alliance Films. The comedy is distributed by New Line Cinema in the U.S.
Cattrall will also be seen this summer in John Boorman’s thriller The Tiger’s Tail, in which she plays the distressed wife of an Irish property developer. She recently starred in the biopic My Boy Jack alongside Daniel Radcliffe (of the Harry Potter films).
‘Ms. Cattrall has an incredibly prolific and successful career in both films and television,’ said Banff exec director Jennifer Harkness, in a statement. ‘It’s a thrill to welcome her to this festival that celebrates the best in the industry.’
In other Banff news, the fest recently unveiled a $15,000 cash development prize for feature documentary filmmakers, sponsored by Discovery Channel and the National Film Board. The award will be given to the best pitch in the Pitch It! Feature Documentary program. The festival runs June 8-11.
