902 Post opens new finishing facility in Halifax

Halifax-based post-production house 902 Post Inc. has opened 902 Post Digital Theatre One, a new feature film picture finishing facility that is the first of its kind in Atlantic Canada, the company announced this week.

The new facility will allow producers to complete colour-correcting work and screen their films in an industry-standard environment. Previously, this type of work required filmmakers to travel outside the region.

The custom-designed DI (digital intermediate) screening theatre is equipped with a DCI-compliant Christie Digital Cinema Projector, Dolby Digital Cinema Sound Processor and a high-tech colour management system, Doug Woods, president of 902 Post Inc., told Playback.

The facility was designed primarily for colour correction, but visual effects, titles and motions within a piece can also be evaluated.

The new facility is a game-changer for Atlantic Canada-based filmmakers, Woods insisted.

“It gives my clients the quality control that they need,” he said. The facility will also handle television projects.

902 Post recently used the facility to complete the colour grading work on Halifax–based director Jay Dahl’s first feature film There Are Monsters.

“It was great to colour in an actual theatre,” Dahl told Playback of the experience. “That is what Doug’s new setup has afforded all of us in Atlantic Canada.”

Dahl also noted that staying local means that producers can save on the costs of heading west to do similar work and still take advantage of regional tax credits.

Other work slated to come through the facility includes Andrea Dorfman’s feature film Heartbeat, and Santa Quest, a documentary from director P.J. Naworynski.
