Modus FX closes its doors

Quebec-based visual effects studio Modus FX has decided to close its doors.

Citing workflow that didn’t align with the realities of the company’s finances, Yanick Wilisky, EVP and cofounder of Modus FX, said that the company could not continue to operate viably under its present conditions.

“We lasted to the maximum that we could,” Wilisky told Playback Daily.

The problems arose as three of the company’s latest projects, staggered appropriately to start, all completed at the same time with no work on the horizon to replace it.

Recently, the studio completed work on the big-budget 2014 release Robocop, a French version of Beauty and the Beast and Strip the City for Discovery.

Modus had previously cut its staff from over 100 to about 20, Wilisky said. The remaining staff have now been let go.

Previous project Modus FX worked on include Now You See Me, This Is The End and The Avengers.
