Verite Films names Jocelyn Cornforth as development head

Canadian producers may be the envy of the world for being able to line up global sales for their TV shows.

But it takes seasoned creative execs to get international audiences hooked on dramas that must also connect with audiences back home.

That’s where veteran screenwriter, story editor and series creator Jocelyn Cornforth (pictured) comes in after Vérité Films on Tuesday named her head of development, drama and scripted TV.

“[Canadian] networks are always looking for the best ideas. That’s their number one priority. The second thing is they want great teams to execute on those ideas, so [a show] is everything it can be. And thirdly, they are expecting Canadian producers to reach out beyond our borders, and find partners to back those ideas,” Vérité Films president Virginia Thompson told Playback Daily about today’s landscape for TV producers.

Cornforth’s TV credits underpin her Canadian and international credentials, from working as a screenwriter and story editor on homegrown dramas like ReGenesis and The Listener to U.K. experience where she worked with Prime Suspect creator Lynda LaPlante, and on British dramas like The Commander and Trial and Retribution.

“The fact that she spent some time in Europe was a great plus. It’s all part of the strategy of incubating great projects and creative, and supporting creative from the ground up, and designing shows that work for the world market,” Thompson insisted.

Here Cornforth will join Thompson and Vérité EVP and creative head Robert de Lint  to collaborate with screenwriters as the indie producer incubates new shows.

And Vérité will in turn continue to use the global heft at Muse Entertainment to get those new shows to international broadcasters as part of an overall first look deal.

“There’s no doubt Jocelyn will maximize the ideas we’re developing in-house and be a terrific support to projects brought to us by the independent writing community,” added Robert de Lint.

Vérité is developing a slate of hour-long drama series, half-hour comedies and features for the Canadian and world markets.
