The Ontario Media Development Corporation is putting up $2 million to aid early development of nearly everything from TV shows to video games. The OMDC’s Screen-based Content Initiative, revealed Tuesday, offers eligible companies in the province funds to bring early-stage projects closer to production.
The program is meant to give producers easier access to development capital, said OMDC boss Karen Thorne-Stone in a release. ‘It will support early-stage development for television, features, mobisodes, webisodes, video games, Internet properties and more.’
Successful applicants will get up to $100,000 to a maximum of 75% of the project’s budget to assist with scriptwriting, design and technical specification documents, and market research, among other things.
Sarah Ker-Hornell, managing director of lobby group FilmOntario, called the initiative ‘an important step towards addressing the access-to-capital gap’ for producers in the province.
