ION boards The Listener as coproducer

American cable channel ION Television has signed on to coproduce the fifth season of The Listener.

The deal makes ION the exclusive American broadcaster of the series, which is currently in production on its fifth season in Toronto.

Produced by Toronto-based Shaftesbury in association with CTV and Fox International Channels, the series airs in over 100 markets worldwide and is distributed by Shine International.

ION is the first U.S.-based channel to carry The Listener since season one, which was launched with NBC as coproducer and broadcaster.

Previous seasons of The Listener are slated to start running on ION this spring, airing in strip to catch viewers up on the action.

The Listener fits seamlessly into our lineup of drama series, providing the reliable quality and originality our loyal audience and clients look for,” said Brandon Burgess, chairman and CEO of ION MediaNetworks, in a statement. “An equally important dimension is the collaboration with CTV and Shaftesbury, as we look for additional new original projects in this genre.”

The series’ latest 13-episode season features several casting updates, including Anthony Lemke’s return as Detective Sergeant Brian Becker (a character last featured in season one) and the addition of Natalie Krill (Rookie Blue) as the series’ first forensics technician.

The Listener was created by writer Michael Amo. The series is executive produced by Christina Jennings and Scott Garvie for Shaftesbury.

The Listener is also executive produced by Sharon Tal Yguado for Fox International Channels, and Peter Mohan, who is showrunner.
