Pool, Émond score at SODEC

MONTREAL — Quebec’s main feature film funding body SODEC has given the green light to seven projects, including films by noted helmers Léa Pool, Bernard Émond and Ricardo Trogi.

Pool’s Une belle mort is based on a book by Gil Courtemanche, the author of A Sunday by the Pool in Kigali. Produced by Productions Équinoxe, the film is about a man whose father has a degenerative illness.

Émond’s La donation is part of his trilogy on hope, faith and charity. It recounts the story of Jeanne — the central character in his award-winning La neuvaine — a despairing doctor who moves to a village in Quebec’s Abitibi region. The film is produced by ACPAV.

Written and directed by Robin Aubert, A l’origine d’un cri, from Studiofilm, also got the go-ahead. Frantic after the death of his wife, a man flees while his family attempts to find him and get to the bottom of the story.

Trogi’s Mille-neuf-cent-quatre-vingt-un is an autobiographical film about the director’s childhood and adolescence produced by Go Films.

Other films that received funding include:

André Mathieu, from Cinémaginaire, a film about a piano virtuoso directed and written by Luc Dionne.

Dix ans from Oscar Films, directed by award-winning TV helmer Podz (Minuit, le soir). It’s the story of a 10-year-old delinquent living in a rehab center, penned by Claude Lalonde, who co-wrote the box-office smash Les 3 p’tits cochons.

Une histoire de cúur – 100 ans du Canadien, produced by Cité-Amérique, a hockey-themed film written by Jacques Savoie and directed by Sylvain Archambault (Les Lavigueur, la vraie histoire).
