Sarah Polley’s Stories We Tell may have been snubbed by the Oscars, but the Writers Guild of America has awarded it the prize for outstanding achievement in writing for a documentary screenplay.
Hosted Saturday, the 2014 Writers Guild Awards recognize achievements in writing for original and adapted screenplays and documentaries.
The film is Polley’s first feature-length documentary. It is distributed by Mongrel Media in Canada, and by Roadside Attractions in the U.S.
Widely expected to earn an Oscar nomination after a raft of recent award nominations and wins – including a recent nomination for the Directors Guild of America’s documentary award – the film missed the final cut in the Academy’s best feature documentary category.
Stories We Tell is one of four projects produced out of the first CFC/NFB Feature Documentary Program. The documentary was produced by Anita Lee of the NFB, and executive produced by Silva Basmajian.
In December, Polley was one of 25 Canadians appointed as an officer for the Order of Canada.
