Demme, Harris TIFF-bound

The latest from high-profile filmmakers Jonathan Demme and Ed Harris will screen at the Toronto International Film Festival, which on Thursday added five more features to its gala and special presentation programs.

Academy Award-winner Demme (The Silence of the Lambs) will walk the red carpet for his family comedy Rachel Getting Married, about a troublemaking ex-model who returns home for her sister’s wedding. It stars Anne Hathaway and Rosemarie DeWitt of TV’s Mad Men. Mongrel Media is the Canadian distributor.

Also screening as a gala is The Other Man, from U.K. director Richard Eyre (Notes on a Scandal), about a husband who sets out to track down the man he suspects is having an affair with his wife. The all-star cast includes Liam Neeson, Antonio Banderas and Laura Linney.

Among special presentations is the world premiere of Ed Harris’ western drama Appaloosa, featuring Harris and Viggo Mortensen as best friends hired to protect a town from a ruthless rancher, played by Jeremy Irons. Harris, who made an impressive helming debut with 2000’s Pollock, previously costarred with Mortensen in David Cronenberg’s A History of Violence.

French actress-turned-filmmaker Anne Fontaine (Nouvelle chance) returns to TIFF with the comedy La Fille de Monaco, while Philippe Claudel will screen his drama I’ve Loved You So Long, starring Kristin Scott Thomas.
