90210 rocks Global, CW

Cushioned by a significant marketing push, the premiere of the much-hyped teen soap 90210 dominated the night on Tuesday, scoring solid audiences for both Global and The CW — where it became the highest-rated debut episode ever on the U.S. caster.

The revival of the popular ’90s series Beverly Hills 90210 scored 1.3 million viewers for its two-hour episode at 8 p.m. on Global, with a cumulative reach of 3.3 million viewers. (All numbers 2+.)

The series follows the scandals and adventures of an all-new group of teens attending Beverly Hills High, with Canuck thesp Shenae Grimes (Degrassi: The Next Generation) in the lead role as Annie Wilson. Alums Jennie Garth and Shannen Doherty are also featured.

The series nabbed an average five million viewers on The CW, and built its audience from its first hour to its second, according to Variety.

90210 will face its first real test next week when CTV starts rolling out new fall fare including a special 95-minute episode of the J.J. Abrams’ sci-fi series Fringe, which will get a double network push as it premieres on both CTV and ‘A’ at 8 p.m. 90210 will move to its regular 9 p.m. timeslot next week, as will Fringe on Sept. 16.

Still with Global, the season-four premiere of the Fox action series Prison Break on Monday garnered 1.2 million viewers, winning the night in the key 18-49 demographic. The number is down from the 1.5 million that tuned in for last year’s season-three debut episode.

Meanwhile, the CBC miniseries Everest averaged 401,000 viewers for part one on Sunday, Aug. 31, down to 387,000 the following night, when it aired opposite Prison Break. The mini stars Jason Priestley and William Shatner in a true story about the first Canadians to set foot on the summit of Mount Everest during a 1982 expedition.
