CTV, CBC join fall race

The fall battle for eyeballs is heating up a notch as Global, fresh off a strong premiere week, gets company from CTV, and to a lesser extent, CBC, which rolls out newly acquired game shows this week.

Crime drama Bones capped off premiere week for Global, averaging 1.6 million viewers for its season-four opener on Wednesday. (All numbers 2+.) It was the largest premiere audience ever for the series, which followed on the heels of strong debuts for 90210 and Prison Break.

Global will unveil new seasons of dependable series including House and Survivor next week, while sister E! joins the party the week of Sept. 22 with new series including actioner Knight Rider and comedy Worst Week.

Meanwhile, CTV kicks off its fall season with the buzzed-about competition show So You Think You Can Dance Canada, which airs a special two-hour episode on Thursday. The broadcaster will wrap up summer reality series Canadian Idol on Wednesday, in which the season six winner will be revealed.

CTV and sister A will team up for a double simulcast of the premier episode of sci-fi series Fringe, starring Canuck Joshua Jackson, on Tuesday at 8 p.m. The series will air in its regular 9 p.m. timeslot beginning Sept. 16 on A.

Perennial favorites Dancing with the Stars, CSI: Miami, CSI: NY and Criminal Minds return to CTV the week of Sept. 22.

Like last year, CBC is holding off on premiering the new seasons of its dramas and comedies until U.S. programs on the private networks have debuted. Shows including Dragon’s Den, The Border, The Tudors and Little Mosque on the Prairie won’t return until the end of the month.

CBC did roll out U.S. game shows Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! — acquired from CBS Paramount International Television, taking them away from CTV — on Monday at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively.

Execs at the pubcaster hope the long-running shows, especially Jeopardy!, will help boost revenues and audiences for primetime programs.
