Carmody readies Boondock sequel

Producers Don Carmody and Chris Brinker are back at work on Boondock Saints — and will next month shoot their long hoped-for sequel to the 1999 cult hit.

Production on the $8-million Boondock Saints 2 — again about vigilante twins played by Sean Patrick Flanery (Powder, Suicide Kings) and Norman Reedus (Deuces Wild) — will run for seven weeks in Toronto starting Oct. 20 before moving to Boston for four days.

The first film, which also starred Willem Dafoe, never saw theaters because of financing complications, though it caught on with young viewers through video.

‘[The video] hit the street and exploded in 2002,’ says Brinker. ‘Where most movies have an 18-month cycle, this one had a five-year upward climb,’ he says, and has maintained contact with fans through its website.

Also back for the sequel is writer/director Troy Duffy, exec producers Lloyd Segan (Greek) and Robert Fried (Man of the Year), and editor Bill DeRonde (Shut Up and Sing).

As for any other returning cast? ‘Pretty much anyone who didn’t get killed in the first one,’ says Carmody, laughing, referring to thesps including Canadians David Ferry, Richard Fitzpatrick and Gerry Parkes. Joining the project are DOP Miroslaw Baszak (Shake Hands with the Devil) and production designer Dan Yard.

The sequel, which is set in Boston, is financed by Canadian tax credits, foreign sales and debt financing. A North American release is planned for All Saints Day — Nov. 1, 2009 — though no distributors are attached at this time.
