Studio backs out of small town

Plans have been abandoned by Minds Eye Pictures and other developers to put up a large studio complex in small-town Saskatchewan following fierce opposition from locals.

The Regina-based production company led by Kevin DeWalt had hoped to build a 24,000-square-foot soundstage near Pilot Butte, a small town of about 2,000 people that lies just to the east of the provincial capital.

The project required re-zoning, and went over poorly with area residents and farmers over concerns of noise and general disruption. Objections were raised at a community meeting earlier this month.

A spokesperson for Minds Eye says the company and its partners will look elsewhere, and that other communities have already expressed interested in the studio.
