Chris Landreth’s Subsconscious Password has won the audience award for best animated short film at the Calgary International Film Festival.

The 11-minute NFB-produced film also screened at TIFF this year. It earlier had its world premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in France, where it won the Annecy Cristal award for best short film.

Australian feature film The Rocket, written and directed by Kim Morduant, won the audience award for best narrative feature. The Lao-language film, which won audience prizes at the Sydney and Melbourne film festivals, is Australia’s official selection for best foreign-language Oscar.

Other audience award winners were Antarctica: A Year on Ice, directed by filmmaker/photographer Anthony Powell, for best documentary, and Josecho de Linares’ Spanish film My Right Eye (The Apple of My Eye) for best live action short.

The festival also announced recipients for its Discovery Awards, with recognize first-time feature directors with a $2,500 cash prize through the RBC Foundation’s Emerging Artists Project.

Brit film Broken, from director Rufus Norris, won for best narrative feature, while Powell’s Antarctica: A Year on Ice, again took the best doc prize.

The Calgary International Film Festival took place Sept. 19 to 29.
