Cross-media experimentation seemed to be a winning formula at this year’s Ottawa International Animation Festival, which awarded prizes for best in show this Saturday at a gala event.

Taking home the 2013 Canadian Film Institute (CFI) Award for Best Canadian Animation was Judith Poirier, a Quebec-based university professor who fused media for her winning film, Two Weeks – Two Minutes (pictured), by printing printed simultaneously on paper and 35mm film stock using letterpress.

Honourable Mentions in the category include The Clockmakers (Les Horlogers) by Renaud Hallee and Crossing Victoria by Steve Woloshea.

The grand prizes of the competition went to Tito on Ice by Max Andersson & Helena Ahonen of Sweden for Best Animated Feature (“for its daring use of the medium”) and to Lonely Bones by Rosto (France, the Netherlands) for Best Short Animation.

Honourable Mention in the Best Animated Feature category went to The Boy and the World (O Menino e o Mundo) by Alê Abreu of Brazil, which the judges said featured “some of the most beautiful images we’ve ever seen” and the Public Prize was awarded to But Milk is Important by Eirik Grønmo Bjørndrn & Anna Mantazaris of Norway.
